Tigers Give Back Day
La Grande High School seniors spent some time and effort contributing to their community on Tigers Give Back Day on October 12th. About 130 senior students participated in the annual service event.
A variety of projects were organized at locations for the students to work on. These included City of La Grande, Island City Elementary School, Neighbors Together, Mt. Emily Recreation Area (MERA), La Grande High School, Union County Fairgrounds, Greenwood Elementary and Ladd Marsh.
LHS Assistant Principal Eric Freeman led a group of 15 seniors to Ladd Marsh where they planted trees and assisted with other miscellaneous fall projects. A group of about the same size went to Neighbors Together and worked hard at splitting and stacking wood for senior citizens and others who are unable to obtain their own firewood. A larger group of approximately 30 seniors were shuttled up to MERA where they worked hard at building trails.
Tigers Give Back Day is a collaborative effort of staff and community members and seniors that promotes positive interactions/relationships between the school, staff, students and the community. In addition, the seniors complete projects in one day that might otherwise take several days to complete.
Kristy Moore, LHS English Language Arts Teacher and Senior Class Advisor, said she thinks the best think about the day is the opportunity it provides for seniors to "give back" to the community that has supported them over the duration of their school years. “It also gives community members an opportunity to spend time working with these young adults and recognize that they are truly growing into skilled citizens who will soon become valuable members of society and make all of us proud,” Moore said.
LHS thanks all of the organizations for their collaboration and all of the seniors for their hard work.
