Island City Elementary – Poinsettia Fundraiser
10-06-22
What’s better than a beautiful poinsettia during the holidays? A beautiful poinsettia that also raises funds for La Grande students!
Island City Elementary is geared up for its annual Poinsettia Fundraiser. This is one of the two fundraisers that the school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) organizes each year. According to Principal Brett Smith, the fundraiser has been going on for 27 years. Students are given order forms and ask their family and friends to purchase the plants. People can also order the poinsettias online. Smith said the school has friendly competitions for the top student sellers and class competitions.
Last year the school sold more than 1,000 of the holiday plants, which are supplied by a company in Washington. “It’s quite something on delivery day to see all those plants in the gym!” Smith said. A group of volunteers work hard to separate the plants into orders for people to pick up.
Smith said the school usually nets between $5,000 to $7,000 from the sale. The PTO is raising money for new playground equipment, which will come from several sources – Wildhorse Foundation, PTO, Island City Elementary School, La Grande School District, plus the City of Island City will provide some transportation and labor. Smith said they hope the new playground will be installed in spring 2023.
