Happy 2021 Central family!

It’s a new year and a new start for us at Central Elementary. While the hardships of 2020 won’t leave us immediately, we’re feeling hopeful these days for a brighter feature close at hand. I know there is so much I have learned about myself this past year, and I hope you can find those nuggets of truth and areas of growth in yourselves too.

Speaking of, in a lesson this week with 3rd grade, our students reflected on what it means to make a ‘resolution’ and why we set goals for ourselves: Achieving our goals overtime helps us become our “best selves” and reach our full potential. I asked 3rd grade to share some of their New Year's resolutions and this is what they said:

Something we started in 2020 at Central Elementary was our 4th grade online cooking club: Cougar Cooks! This past week we cooked Brussel sprouts; a vegetable that I was not particularly fond of myself as a young one. I wasn’t sure how the kids would react to this one, but with the addition of a honey, chili and lime dressing and roasted to perfection in the oven, they turned out to be delicious: I watch myself one of our cooks take a bite of their creation, eyes bulge and exclaim; “Starts out sweet... and then gets spicy… they BLAST WITH FLAVOR!” It made my day!

This coming week with Cougar Cooks, we’re trying something very special: our cooks enjoyed using the oven so much that we’re going to make bread together. Thanks to an incredibly generous gift from the King Arthur Baking Company, I will be sending home a baking kit for every single 4th grader, and we will be baking bread together virtually at 5pm next Wednesday night! Look out for an email if you’re in the 4th grade for more details!

We are so thankful that COVID has lessened in our community the past few weeks to allow us to return to in-person instruction- something we have hoped for all year long. We know that we can continue being safe here at school, but we are all in this together and it’s going to take all of us doing our best and being safe to keep them here.

So let’s do this! Mask up! Wash em up!

Keep calm and carry on!
