Young Musicians Share Joy of Holiday Music

Young musicians in the La Grande School District and community recently shared their musical talents to spread some holiday cheer on Tuesday, December 10th at the La Grande High School Auditorium. The district’s Fiddle Club performed and integrated new musicians (who completed two months of instruction) with experienced players (who have played one to six years).

Carla Arnold, Lead Fiddle Club Instructor, said some of the musical pieces were leveled and included everyone, some music specifically showcased experienced players and some featured dance fiddle tunes and group singing. The music was a combination of holiday-themed and non-holiday pieces.

The concert featured 72 string musicians in grades 3rd through 12th playing violin, cello and string bass. The evening ended with Santa proving a photo opportunity with students holding their instruments and a gift bag exchange.

“The concert was wonderful!” Arnold said. “This was an amazing showcase of this fast-growing, after-school strings program which is a collaboration between LGSD and the Grande Ronde Symphony Association.”

Fiddle Club is open to all students in the La Grande School District and offers one group lesson per week. For the program, Arnold said she foresees two public performances a year at the auditorium, current weekly and monthly jams, an annual family square dance, an annual collaboration with the Grande Ronde Symphony in May, a year-end tour of schools and an upcoming fiddle contest.

The December concert also featured the Grande Ronde Junior Symphony, which performed three pieces under the direction of Denise Hattan.
