First graders in Mrs. Troutman’s classroom have been using multiple ways to improve their reading skills using the Daily 5 Literacy Framework. The intention of the program is to meet the varying needs of all students in a class while building a genuine love of reading. The structure has students participate in meaningful reading activities, while the teacher and assistant work uninterrupted with small groups. The Daily 5 are practiced in all La Grande School District K-5 classrooms and are the routine in grades 1-4.
The Daily 5 components include: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing and Word Work. Troutman said right now, her class has implemented three of the five activities, but eventually they will incorporate all five.
Here’s to reading, Greenwood first graders!
Mrs. Troutman works with Briella, Oliver, and Evelynn.
